A Day in the Life


Leads National and Strategic Accounts contracting team that supports the US Market Sales teams across the Neuroscience, Medical Surgical and Cardiovascular portfolios.  Contracting Director is responsible for driving consistency and performance excellence across the contracting team.  This team is responsible for all aspects of the contracting lifecycle; specifically, the team develops, administers and manages contracts for all national accounts, GPO’s and strategic accounts. Conducts proposal preparation, supports contract negotiation, contract administration, and customer contact activities to provide for proper contract acquisition and fulfillment in accordance with company policies, legal requirements, and customer specifications. Prepares bids; processes specifications, progress, and other reports; advises management of contractual rights and obligations; compiles and analyzes data; and maintains historical information.   This leader will work closely with the VP of National Accounts and the VP’s of Strategic accounts and their direct reports.   This team will also be responsible the contracting processes for Medtronic’s multi-business unit or portfolio ‘wrap around’ contracting strategy in conjunction with the strategic sales teams.    Finally, this leader will be responsible for developing a consistent contracting experience for national and strategic customers and developing a new an novel contract launch strategy designed to maximize revenue.

PEOPLE LEADERSHIP OF NATIONAL ACCOUNTS CONTRACTING TEAM This position is responsibility for leading a team of geographically dispersed individuals performing the same contracting activities aligned to US Market sales teams within the Americas Region.  Most of the time is spent overseeing their area of responsibility, managing performance, developing talent, engagement and inclusion, communicating business and operational developments, planning, prioritizing and / or directing the responsibilities of direct reports. Goal achievement is accomplished through performance of direct and / or indirect reports.  Key responsibilities of this role include: setting a common vision for the newly integrated team, developing strategic priorities and plans for the team, accountability for mentoring, developing and coaching staff on meeting/exceeding performance expectations and defined objectives, providing leadership to staff ensuring the prioritization of strategic and department level initiatives to include defining performance goals and targets, conducting performance reviews, and staff 1:1s to guide performance management and employee development efforts and manage toward departmental goals.

Operating autonomously is critical for success in this role.  Provides motivational leadership for the area managed. Provides thought and technical leadership and performs work without appreciable direction.

Management authority to make large business decisions and some strategic decisions.

Problems and issues faced are complex, difficult and undefined, and require detailed information gathering, analysis and investigation to understand the problem.

Communication and Influence: Develops long term strategic relationships and alliances with key internal and external stakeholders.
Communicates and conducts briefings with senior or executive leadership regarding ongoing operations and strategic initiatives.
Influences across functions and businesses to negotiate and gain cooperation on operational issues and internal divergent objectives.

Leadership and Talent Management: Directs and leads a department, broad functional area or geography, including one or more teams led by managers and / or supervisors.
Determines supervisory relationships, and creates workforce and staffing plans to accomplish business results.
Authorizes hiring, firing, promotion and reward within own area.


Must Have: Minimum Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience with 7+ years of managerial experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience with 7+ years of managerial experience

  • Experience driving contracting excellence within a large, complex portfolio where sales success is critically dependent upon defending product value through differentiation.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work well under pressure and maintain positive, enthusiastic attitude
  • Eagerness to learn and expand responsibilities
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and build strong working relationships, particularly with a remote team.
