A Day in the Life

The Tooling Engineering Technician is primarily responsible for the modification or enhancement of gauges, fixtures and special tooling used on the production floor. May occasionally design gauges, fixtures, or other special tooling of moderate complexity. Resolves technical production problems on assigned product lines involving special tooling and fixturing. Initiates improvements to special tooling and fixturing used in current manufacturing methods and processes to improve part quality, schedule performance and to reduce manufacturing costs.

Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 7:30am-4:30pm

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing and field service operations.
  • Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools, such as CAD, CAM, CATIA, ProEngineer, Solidworx or Siemens NX Software.
  • Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal.
  • Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications.
  • Provide guidance and assistance in creating CAD drawings and interacts with the product development and manufacturing engineers to check design and manufacturing drawings.
  • Provide guidance and assistance in creating and maintaining CAD gauge, fixture and special tool drawings and interacts with quality and manufacturing engineers and manufacturing personnel to ensure gauge and fixture drawings meet production requirements, are current, and meet the intent of the manufacturing process requirements.
  • Makes appropriate changes to special tooling and fixturing designs when dictated by product engineering drawing changes.
  • Document all changes through the Manufacturing Engineering process change control system.
  • Works closely with in-house Tool Makers on production of tooling and fixturing designs.
  • Working with Product Team members reviews product drawings for producibility and makes suggestions for drawing changes to improve manufacturing quality as related to special tooling and fixturing.
  • Works with other product members to conceptualize tooling designs and then assumes responsibility for finalizing CAD designs.
  • Conducts tool design reviews with engineering personnel, purchasing personnel and outside tool suppliers.
  • Provides technical support to purchasing personnel and suppliers on problems involving special tooling and fixturing.
  • Trains shop employees on new fixturing and special tooling designs.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience and may require vocational or technical education and advanced certification in addition to prior work experience.
High School Diploma is required. 

Nice to Have

Individual must possess good written and verbal communication skills and must be able to work independently and be a self-starter.
