A Day in the Life

The Design Technician is primarily responsible for the creation, modification and manipulation of part and assembly models, along with detailed design drawings. Works with Engineers to create original designs, as well as update existing ones. Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products to facilitate development, test and manufacturing activities.

Primarily designing medical device products including, but not limited to, catheters, leads and associated cardiac therapy delivery tools. May occasionally design gauges, fixtures, or other special tooling of moderate complexity.

Work schedule: Typical day shift, M-F.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.
  • Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing and test activities.
  • Supports current, released products and associated design changes as directed through Engineering Change Request process.
  • Utilizes computer-aided design tools (CAD), including Pro-E/Creo (primarily) and SolidWorks (nice to have).
  • Utilizes computer information systems, including ENOVIA and Agile, adhering to internal processes, to process and store design information.
  • Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, prepares original rough layouts and sketches to present design proposal. Prepare tolerance/surface area analysis and associated reporting as required.
  • Coordinates design criteria with engineering, testing, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning groups such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications.
  • Prepares models for 3D printing, electronic transfer, simulations, and presentations.
  • Works with groups to identify and clarify design needs. Works autonomously to prioritize numerous project tasks, and complete design tasks according to project schedules.
  • May provide work direction to other designers

Must Have: Minimum Requirements
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience and may require vocational or technical education and advanced certification in addition to prior work experience.
  • High School Diploma or GED is required. 

Nice to Have
  • Proficient at creating detailed mechanical drawings for piece parts and assemblies per ASME Y14.5 drafting standards and in compliance with ISO standards for the design and manufacturing of medical devices. (Must)
  • Product Lifecycle Management experience with PDMLink / Windchill, for use with Pro-E/Creo. (Must)
  • Experience with geometric dimension and tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience designing injection molded components and familiarity with micro molding.
  • Experience in manufacturing and/or design departments, being able to contribute expertise in materials, processes, lean design and cardiac therapy delivery systems.
  • Experience with Enovia (3DS) and/or Agile (Oracle).
