The position requires a lawyer experienced in Emerging Africa with a proven track record in advising, structuring and implementing complex projects in the EA region. The position requires a strong generalist with an ability to advise strategically and act operationally on a broad range of topics, which includes: advise on a broad range of legal and compliance topics including implementation of new commercial projects, business models, commercial contracts including suppliers, distributors, agreements with HMOs, employment law and disputes, competition law and related pricing issues, corporate matters, IP, public procurement law, litigation/arbitration, product liability, data protection, M&A activities and integrations, medical device regulatory issues; and all combined with a robust and process-driven approach to the management of legal and compliance matters in accordance with local law and the Medtronic policies and procedures. The position requires a lawyer having worked with multiple geographies in Emerging Africa with a proven track record in advising on complex projects and supporting a multitude of operational activities.
MAIN JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide strategic guidance and commercially-oriented operational legal and compliance support to management/business units/functions across the EA region.
- Advise on a wide array of strategic projects on the corporate and commercial side, including the set up of new presences and the evaluation /implementation of new business models.
- Counsel business clients practically and strategically on legal and compliance issues relating to the businesses/operations in question.
- Manage the implementation and supervision of the Distributor Policies, including review and approval of distributors, negotiation of distributor agreements, advising on renewals and terminations and conducting the Distributor Monitoring Program.
- Draft and negotiate commercial contracts with third parties, such as suppliers, hospitals, HMOs and healthcare providers.
- Advise on legal & compliance matters, such as drafting, review and negotiation of a wide range of commercial and non-commercial agreements.
- Provide operational support on the daily activities of the local operations, including rendering support to the various functions (HR, Pricing, Regulatory).
- Support and drive the consistent implementation of compliance rules and processes and foster a culture of ethics and compliance across the region deploying various tools.
- Prepare and conduct meetings and training sessions with employees and distributors on Medtronic policies and procedures.
- Support the EMEA Legal and Compliance team on new processes and projects to ensure local implementation and effective incorporation of legal and compliance requirements into commercial and business activities.
- Create and update contract templates based on best practices and evolving legal standards to reduce risk and increase efficiency.
- Effectively manage relationships with outside counsel to maximize the quality of representation and minimize legal expenses.

JOB EXPERIENCE Minimum of 8 years’ experience in an international firm or law firm. Work experience across Emerging Africa People management experience. | In house experience with a medical device, (bio) technology or pharma company. |
