 Manufacturing Engineer  (Supplier Reliability)   


Summary of Position:

·         The Manufacturing Engineer (Supplier Reliability) responsibilities include but not limited to provide technical and subject matter expert support to the Supplier Development & Improvement Program. This includes collaborating and working with Quality Engineering, Global Sourcing, Global Supplier Excellence, manufacturing sites and other team members to improve quality and service with our suppliers.

·         The Mfg. Eng will provide direction, to other cross functional team members to ensure projects and program deliverables are met.

·         The Mfg. Eng will not only need to follow but to develop new company’s best practices and standard procedures to continue to be best in class in the global healthcare industry for Operations.

Essential Functions:

·         Review part drawings and part design to ensure compliance with standards and quality requirements including identification of CTQs and stop signs. Ensure Suppliers are using current rev level of drawings

·         Review and identify opportunities for improvement on the supplier’s quality system. I.e. SPC implementation, historical data tracking system to assure process capability (CPk/Ppk).

·         Frequently audit suppliers to ensure established standard procedures and in process inspections and work instructions are followed.

·         Engaged and work together with the Tooling Management group to effectively implement Tooling Management Program.

·         Manufacturing and Project Engineering lead for activities in accordance with standard operating procedures.

·         Key participant in DFMEA, PFMEA, and CTQ processes assuring specifications are well defined and documented.

·         Assure production requirements are achieved for component and assembly tooling specifications, supplier selection, and qualification.

·         Communicate and coordinate activities with multiple functional groups both within and outside of operations.


Department Specific/Non-Essential Functions:

·         Some travel to manufacturing sites and supplier visits required.

·         Provide required guidance to ensure set deliverables are met and obstacles are overcome. 

·         Review project proposals to ensure feasibility and provide comments.

·         Continue to enhance engineering and leadership skills through additional training and education.

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems.
  • Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes.
  • Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications.
  • Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications.
  • May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Education Required:

Bachelor's Degree Required

BS Engineering or Equivalent

Minimum Experience:

Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 0 years of experience


·         Dynamic, positive attitude

·         Strong communication, manufacturing process, product industrialization and leadership skills

·         Solid design, troubleshooting and presentation skills

·         Strong project management skills

·         Well versed in molding, stamping and machining methods

·         Experience in assembly equipment technologies


·         Working Knowledge of Six Sigma

·         Working knowledge of GD&T

·         Working knowledge of DFMEA, PFMEA, and Risk Tools

·         Working knowledge of DFA/ DFM principles

Organizational Relationships/Scope:

Close-working interface with remote manufacturing sites, supporting departments, upper management and Covidien suppliers

Working Conditions:

Standard office setting, clean room manufacturing area, Hospital OR
