Danvers Massachusetts is home to Medtronic’s Extrusion Technology Center of Excellence, and we are looking for a Materials Engineer II with experience in Plastics and Polymers to provide technical support in the area of Injection Molding and Extrusion.  You will research materials used in thermoplastic injection molded systems.  This includes materials selection, problem-solving, and applied research.  You will be an important part of cross functional teams supporting corporate projects both internally and internationally within Medtronic and external vendors.

You will be an individual contributor with responsibility in our technical functions to advance existing technology or introduce new technology and therapies. Formulates, delivers and / or manages projects assigned and works with other stakeholders to achieve desired results. May act as a mentor to colleagues or may direct the work of other lower level professionals. The majority of time is spent delivering R&D, systems or initiatives related to new technologies or therapies – from design to implementation - while adhering to policies, using specialized knowledge and skills.

  • Serve as the thermoplastic molding representative on a team. Work independently with general supervision on larger, moderately complex projects / assignments.
  • Contribute to project milestones on the team and this may have some involvement in cross functional assignments.
  • Communicate primarily and frequently with internal team members.
  • Set objectives for own job area to meet the objectives of projects and assignments.
  • Participate in technical activities for materials selection, processing, and product design with the team.
  • Work with upstream and downstream process owners to improve process reliability.
  • Generation of 3D CAD models.
  • Responsible for coordinating material, equipment and tooling with external vendors.

Problems and issues faced are difficult, and may require understanding of multiple issues, job areas or specialties. Analysis provided is in-depth in nature and often provides recommendations on process improvements.

A Day in the Life:

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Analyze, research, design and develop materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems.
  • Apply principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes.
  • Develop, analyze and apply material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications.
  • Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications.
  • May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required and minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 0 years of experience.
  • Practical knowledge and demonstrated competence within job area typically obtained through education combined with experience. 

Nice to Have:

  • Degree in Engineering.  Strong preference for Bachelor of Science degree in Plastics or Polymer Science.
  • Master’s degree helpful.
  • Extrusion experience.
  • Internship and/or Co-op experience while in college.
  • Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering experience is helpful. 
  • Knowledge of injection molding and knowledge of injection molded tool design for thermoplastics.
  • Hands on experience working on injection molding machines.
  • Demonstrated computer skills such as Solidworks, Moldflow Analysis, Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Working knowledge of Statistics.
  • Process Engineering experience in a Manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in Medical Device, Pharmaceutical or other Regulated Industry.
  • Working knowledge of Moldflow.
  • Working knowledge of Design of Experiments and familiarity with Statistical software such as Minitab.
  • Familiarity with Insert injection molding and vertical injection molding systems.
  • Experience in process and equipment validation.
