The Microbiologist 1 position is an entry level, laboratory based position whose major purpose is to support the Plymouth laboratory.  The Microbiologist 1 will support microbiological testing, sterilization, and environmental monitoring activities. Schedules, conducts, documents, and communicates the results of microbiology laboratory and sterilization tests. Must be capable of conducting routine laboratory tasks with minimal or no supervision but may need to consult with microbiologists or sterilization specialists for guidance and support. Conducts laboratory test work in accordance with specific, detailed instructions. Orders lab supplies and ensures adequate inventory is readily available for use in testing. Participates in scheduled lab cleaning and maintenance activities. 

The Plymouth Laboratory Services Department located in Plymouth, MN directly services manufacturing locations worldwide.  The Microbiologist I works both individually and as part of a team.


Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned

  • Work primarily within the microbiology laboratory performing standard microbiological tests (i.e. bioburden, endotoxin, characterizations, and environmental monitoring)
  • Coordination and execution of sterilization requalification/dose audit protocols
  • Test DI water for microbial and bacterial endotoxin content
  • Collect, analyze, and trend microbiological data and provide summaries to internal customers
  • Perform environmental testing of clean-rooms: Non-Viable Air Particulate Counts, Viable Air Particulate Counts, Contact Surface Plates, Microbial Assays
  • Ordering/stocking of supplies. Ensure lab supply inventory is maintained at adequate levels to support required laboratory testing
  • May provide training and instruction to others, as required.
  • Develop new laboratory procedures and maintain existing procedures
  • Lead investigations for out of tolerance events and implement effective corrective actions
  • Follow standard operating procedures (SOP’s) and gain certification through on the job training from team leader.

Bachelor's degree in Science or technical field with 0+ years of work experience in microbiology, sterilization, and/or biocompatibility experience

Nice to Have
College biology courses/laboratory.

Computer Skills: Requirements - Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point


Aseptic Technique, Comfort with using repeater and mechanical pipetters


Listening; Written and Oral Communication, Organized; Time Management
