As a member of the Mechanical Engineering Department in the Diabetes Research and Development Center of Expertise, the Principal R&D Engineer plays a significant role in the planning, scheduling, tracking, documentation, and oversight of projects for diabetes-related products, accessories and cross-functional initiatives. 

The person filling this role will become part of a dynamic and fast-paced R&D group with a strong history of successful product developments. They will have the opportunity to interface with the end customer, as well as various functional groups within the diabetes business unit. 

The ideal candidate for this position has had experience in medical device design and development, with an emphasis on product development.  This individual has experience managing projects of medium to high level of complexity through the various phases of the project lifecycle: definition, planning, execution and delivery.  This individual is responsible for creating and maintaining schedules and budgets, providing feedback to the engineering team, working vendors and cross-functional partners through technical issues, and collaborating across the matrix within the organization. 

A Day in the Life
Oversee day-to-day development, within mechanical engineering, of one or more projects which have matured to the point of product development, in accordance with Medtronic Standard Operating Procedures.
Grow and maintain technical knowledge current with advancing technology related to product development of diabetes devices and accessories. 
Provide guidance and mentorship to junior engineering staff
Create project schedules within Microsoft Project and Excel, as appropriate
Coordinate and oversee development and testing activities both at the vendor and within Medtronic facilities
Help establish program objectives and milestones in conjunction with engineering staff
Assemble teams together around an evolving issue to arrive at robust technical solutions
Knowledge of variable and fixed asset costs of a technical development project to build accurate project budgets
Create and release documents within the product lifecycle control system according to Medtronic quality requirements; Process engineering change orders.
Plan, schedule, track, and provide technical feedback on mechanical concept design, tolerance analysis, finite element analysis, or other design analysis
Be primary point of contact with external vendors, and a Core Team Member for the project team
Translate voice of customer (VOC) feedback into engineering design requirements 
Facilitate collaboration on various development projects within the mechanical engineering team, and between functional groups. 
Ensure specification, test methodologies, and test equipment used to evaluate design concepts meet the objectives of the project. 
Help ensure designs meet and exceed product specifications, regulatory requirements, local and international standards.
Presents out technical capability assessments to wide audience, including SLT
Ability to travel within the US and Internationally, up to 25%.

Designs, develops, analyzes, troubleshoots and provides technical skills during research and/or product development.
Designs studies to investigate specific life science questions within field of expertise.
May be involved in product research and development and/or clinical trials.
Translates research discoveries into usable and marketable products.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements
Education Required
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Sciences and 7+ years of industry experience OR Masters of Science in Mechanical Engineering or Sciences and 5+ years of industry experience.

Specialized Knowledge or Skills Required
Experience in solid modeling software such as SolidWorks and/or ProEngineer.

Nice to Have
Ability to track multiple tasks and projects. 
Experience using Microsoft Project to create and maintain detailed project schedules.
Demonstrated ability to clearly and concisely communicate in both verbal and written form. 
Experience designing and developing new products, including electromechanical assemblies.
Experience creating and reviewing technical drawings, requirements, written procedures, engineering reports and Bill of Materials.
Familiarity with design control process in a regulated environment.
Experience and ability to work with key partners and stakeholders across various geographies and time zones. 
Degree (undergrad or masters) in Mechanical Engineering, or a degree in biomedical engineering with an emphasis in Mechanical Engineering
Experience with medical device product development
Design Verification Testing (DVT) experience and knowledge
Process and product validation experience, preferably in the medical device or pharmaceutical industries
Ability to analyze technical issues independently and within a team environment, generate concepts and selection criteria and down select the best concept. 
Demonstrated application of statistical and/or sensitivity analysis
Familiarity with structural finite element software such as Cosmos or Analysis
Experience in plastic part design, injection molding and other mechanical manufacturing processes
Commitment to working in a collaborative and dynamic research field 
Knowledge of mechanical systems
