A Day in the Life

As a Principal Electrical Engineer working at the Medtronic, you will be a main contributor in the mechatronics and robotics electronic design team. Your daily work involves specifying and designing complex embedded electronic circuits, sensors, and actuators. In your role you will closely collaborate with Mechanical engineers, Software and Controls engineers to develop the next generation mechatronic platform that will help us shape the future of surgery.

As a Principal Electrical Engineer, you will:

  • Derive electronics specifications from system and subsystem requirements
  • Design, verify and document electrical circuits controlling a surgical robot. Circuitry will involve sensor frontends with differential amplifiers, motor control circuits, FPGA and ARM processing parts and high-speed memory like DDR3.
  • Design models and execute simulations, analyze results, develop, and document test procedures and protocols
  • Design, test, and debug many-layer custom printed circuit boards
  • Collaborate with internal and external partners on the development and specification of actuators and sensors
  • Prepare and participate in design reviews
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

Nice to Have
  • Thorough understanding of BLDC motors, their control circuitry and control algorithms
  • Thorough understanding of rotary positions sensors and encoders as well as torque and force sensors
  • Ability to review PCB designs, fabrication/assembly data and to bring up, debug and test custom designed electronics
  • Independence and self-motivation – we are looking for a self-starter with an autonomous working style
  • Skills in strategic thinking, problem solving attitude, good planning and time management
  • Ability to work in teams – we are looking for a team player!
  • Fluency in English is required (German a plus)
  • Knowledge of embedded software development
  • Knowledge of VHDL or Verilog (VHDL preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with medical, surgical, or safety-critical devices/instruments, medical product development, regulatory process, safety
  • Communication skills that allow you to navigate a matrix organization with ease
  • Experience with working in cross functional teams within an international environment
  • Ability to travel up to 25%
