**REMOTE OPPORTUNITY**

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The Principal Packaging Engineer leads and oversees the research, development, and design of packaging systems, materials, and packaging technology for new and existing medical devices.  
Provides expertise and guidance in the various areas of packaging engineering to the department internal and external business partners. Interact with multidisciplinary groups including R&D, Operations, Labeling, Tooling/Automation, Sourcing, and Marketing to provide unparalleled, leading edge packaging solutions in support of Operating Unit strategic goals and achieving desired results.
The Principal Engineer drives new levels of packaging excellence across global locations to ensure long term manufacturing efficiency, quality, and regulatory compliance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop packaging solutions to complex projects in a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment as part of New Product Development and engineering programs.
  • Drive packaging development projects to ensure strong competitive ability and fulfillment of customer needs.
  • Supports strategic Operations Network initiatives. 
  • Provide guidance and leadership to Packaging Engineers with varying degrees of technical expertise and professional experience.
  • Evaluate the current state of various medical devices package designs; perform gap assessments, develop, and execute remediation plans.
  • Support quality audits and regulatory affairs technical file submissions. 
  • Authors technical deficiency responses and drives compliance to industry regulation requirements.
  • Determines packaging specifications according to the nature of the product, cost limitations, legal requirements, and the type of device protection required.
  • Leads successful verification of packaging systems for medical devices. 
  • Authors and executes packaging protocols and operational procedures.
  • Manage multiple projects and drive multi-disciplined cross functional global teams to effectively complete tasks on schedule. 
  • Keep abreast of new packaging technologies and provide project and functional leadership to champion new materials or technology and recommend for consideration where appropriate.


DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC/NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Up to 15% travel to global manufacturing sites and suppliers.
  • Continue to enhance engineering and leadership skills through additional training and education.
  • Follow established guidelines and management direction with regard to engineering decisions and departmental/ company policy.
     
A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Designs, develops, and tests a wide variety of containers used for the protection, display, and handling of products.
  • Determines packaging specifications according to the nature of the product, cost limitations, legal requirements, and the type of protection required, considering need for resistance to such external variables as moisture, corrosive chemicals, temperature variations, light, heat, rough handling, and tampering.
  • Designs package exteriors considering such factors as product identification, sales appeal, aesthetic quality, printing and production techniques.
  • Responsibilities may include documentation management and/or coordination of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and may support prototype line development in manufacturing facilities/plants.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant experience

Nice to Have

Experience:  

  • Engineering experience in Medical Device, Pharmaceutical or related industry. Demonstrated experience managing cross functional global projects and/or teams.  

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Strong leadership and Project Management skills.  
  • Experience managing/supervising others is preferred. 
  • Six Sigma tools and Lean Manufacturing concepts preferred.

Skills/Competencies:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Access, Excel, Project, Visio and Word.
  • Working familiarity with SAP, AutoCAD, Minitab, Visual Basic, Tops or equivalent.

Other Skills:    

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.  
  • Works independently with minimal supervision.  
  • Solid organization and planning skills, facilitation and leading teams.
  • Ability to work with a diverse cross-cultural environment

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/SCOPE:

  • Close working relationships with project leaders, functional groups department heads and global personnel.
  • Close working relationship with suppliers.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Remote
  • Clean room manufacturing area and model shop. 
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to work near moving mechanical parts.
