Principal Systems Engineer

This position has the responsibility and authority to provide Systems Engineering leadership in cross-functional medical device development projects. The candidate applies extensive technical expertise towards software, hardware and systems solutions of complex technical problems, and provides solutions that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity.
Day in the life:

• The Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for providing extensive leadership in the development of cutting edge products used in the medical field.  Specific tasks include:
• Designing, developing, testing and documenting software, hardware, and system components and applications.
• Leading the definition and development of user needs, business needs, use cases, requirements, and system architecture.
• Leading the analysis of identified design solutions to ensure fulfillment of needs, use cases, requirements, and system architecture.
• Providing expertise and leadership in planning and conducting user evaluations of product concepts.
• Providing expertise and leadership in identifying and addressing technical risks, product hazards and failure analysis.
• Providing expert clinical knowledge of surgical procedures and techniques.
• Troubleshooting system component integration in addition to maintaining and supporting existing products.
• Providing people leadership and mentorship within the organization which may include serving as a direct manager of technical employees.
• Ensuring adherence to Medtronic and other quality standards including design procedures and compliance requirements.
• Interfacing and leading all project team members including engineering (mechanical, electrical, software, systems, and test), quality, regulatory, marketing, technical communications, end users, technical support, production, and suppliers.
• Applying technical expertise and leadership to products outside of the ENT product portfolio.
• Supporting labs and surgical evaluations of products in addition to representing the company at industry trade shows and customer sites.
• Recommending, leading, and participating in on-going individual and team professional development activities.
• Leading the identification, implementation, and organizational change of significant or complex process improvements.
• Willingness and ability to assume increased responsibility.
• Leading the organization, estimation, scheduling, resourcing, and completion of project milestones in collaboration with Project Manager.
• All activities must be performed in compliance with the Quality System.
• Performs duties in compliance with environmental, health and safety related site rules, policies or governmental regulations.
• All other duties as assigned.
• Travel requirement: 10-20%
Must Have: Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering
- 7+ years of experience with Bachelors Degree  OR 5+ years of experience with Masters Degree

Nice to Have
• Expertise in the medical device industry and/or surgical techniques.
• Expertise in Systems Engineering as related to stakeholder needs definition, creation of use case workflows, requirements definition and decomposition, functional architecture, and system design.
• Expertise planning and conducting user evaluations of product concepts, analyzing data, documenting evaluation methods and results, and presenting design recommendations to product teams.
• Familiarity with software design, algorithm design, GUI design, and iterative software development practices.
• Familiarity and experience working with Matlab, Linux, C++, or scripting languages.
• Familiarity with mechanical and/or electrical design, mechanical/electrical drawings, tolerance analysis, and computer-aided design (CAD).
• Experience with people management and mentoring of technical employees.
• Ability to provide creativity while solving complex problems without known solutions.
• Ability to quickly prototype new concepts and ideas.
• Ability to assess new technologies via comprehensive reviews of the state-of-the-art.
• Project management skills including leading a complex project team as well as planning and estimation of tasks, milestones, resources, and budget for large, complex systems.
• Expert knowledge of software, hardware, and system design, development, troubleshooting and test practices.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Extensive leadership skills and mentoring capabilities.
• Ability to work in a team environment and directly contribute to its success.
• Ability to drive change.
