A Day in the Life
In this position you will provide intellectual property legal support to Medtronic’s business operations in the Region Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). You will be located at one of Medtronic’s sites in the EMEA region and required to periodically visit major R&D sites in the EMEA region, including Maastricht (Netherlands), Yoqneam, Caesarea, Herzeliya, Petach-Tikva, Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem (Israel), and Galway (Ireland). As part of the regional IP team you will report to the Head of Intellectual Property Operations EMEA and support IP Partners of several Operating Units in implementing the global IP strategies in the EMEA region. To this end you will support the local research and development teams in the EMEA region and advise internal clients at all levels of R&D and business leadership on various IP matters in the EMEA region.

Medtronic considers EMEA an excellent location for R&D and as a result multiple Operating Units carry out important R&D activities in the region. These include the Medtronic Bakken Research Center in Maastricht, Medtronic’s Spinal Robotics site in Caesarea, the Gastrointestinal site in Yoqneam, where we develop the next generation of the PillCam capsule endoscope, the Patient Monitoring site in Jerusalem that is a center of world-class expertise in the space of capnography and brain monitoring, the Petakh-Tikva site that leads the development of Medtronic’s surgical visualization solutions.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Provide advice and counsel on intellectual property matters, including identifying patentable inventions
  • Either yourself or with the help of outside counsel prepare, file, and prosecute patent applications to obtain broadest possible protection for inventions originating from the local inventors
  • Negotiate IP clauses in contracts (research agreements, supply agreements, joint development agreements, etc.) for Medtronic’s businesses and/or with third parties in the EMEA region
  • Support and/or drive enforcement of Medtronic’s IP rights in the EMEA region in alignment with the global IP Partners
  • Ensure that all commercially important inventions originating from the R&D sites in the EMEA region are protected by valid intellectual property rights
  • Assist in preparing freedom-to-operate clearances for new products developed at R&D sites in the EMEA region
  • Identify and protect valuable trade secrets created at R&D sites in the EMEA region

Must Have:

  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering or Computer Science or Informatics or Physics or other similar scientific background required
  • Qualified to act before a national Patent Office in the EMEA region (e.g., Israeli Patent Agent, German patent attorney, Dutch patent attorney, etc.) and preferably before the European Patent Office
  • Minimum of 5 or more years of relevant experience in IP after passing the patent exam

Nice to have:

  • Knowledge about protecting software and artificial intelligence related inventions
  • Both in-house and law firm experience
  • Excellent judgment, strong strategic and analytical thinking, and ability to work on multiple projects at the same time
  • Excellent priority-setting skills and communications skills to deal with direct client contact and management
  • Proficiency in engineering, strong creative abilities, and scientific principles
  • Understanding of basic business concepts, strategies, and risks
  • Broad IP experience, including patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate, opinion preparation, licensing, and IP transactions
  • Medical device experience
  • Litigation experience
  • Possess a strong commitment to company values
