The Restorative Therapies Group develops life-restoring therapies and healthcare solutions that span the care continuum; integrating technologies and applying clinical and economic evidence to increase patient access, improve efficiency of procedures and deliver successful patient outcomes.

Within RTG, the SPINE division shapes spine surgery for the better; delivering procedural solutions and therapeutic biologics and partnering with other healthcare stakeholders to accelerate innovations that can improve surgical efficiencies and help create better outcomes for more patients.

A Day in the Life

As a Senior Microbiologist, you will work on assignments that are complex in nature where judgment and initiative are required in resolving problems and making recommendations.  Provide input to Sterilization Services Team regarding sterilization, testing and technical issues. Work with contract sterilizers to maintain sterilization cycles using either Steam (Moist Heat), Gamma Sterilization or Ethylene Oxide Sterilization in accordance with all industry, Federal and international guidance documents/regulations. Interact with Regulatory, Quality, Packaging and R&D Engineering in Memphis to maintain the microbiological specifications and test plans necessary to ensure compliance with the overall Quality Requirements. Assist with microbiological and sterilization issues affecting manufacturing. Serves as consultant for laboratory on technical issues. 


Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Identifies and validates molecular targets that play a key role in a particular disease process.
  • Studies origin, relationship, development, anatomy, functions, and chemical processes of living organisms; this may include studies in the growth, structure, and development of bacteria and other microorganisms.
  • Conducts research to determine the effects of materials such as nutrients, drugs, serums, hormones, and other substances on tissues and vital processes of living organisms.
  • Analyzes materials to determine their toxic or nontoxic properties, binding and efficacy.
  • Isolates or purifies analyses, and identifies hormones, minerals, proteins, and/or cultures of microorganisms to determine their biological properties.
  • Examines chemical aspects of formation of antibodies and conducts research into chemistry of cells and cell division.
  • May identify and produce small quantities of new drugs, pharmaceutical compounds and/or nutrients.

Must Have: Minimum Qualifications

To be considered for this role, the minimum requirements must be evident on your resume. 

  • Bachelors degree (e.g., Biological Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Public Heath or related field) required.
  • Minimum of 4 years of in sterilization or microbiology (e.g., clean room, sterilization/microbiology lab) or advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years of in sterilization, or microbiology (e.g., clean room, sterilization/microbiology lab)
Nice to Have
  • Advanced degree in Biological Science, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Public Heath or related field
  • Experience at Medtronic or within a medical device industry.
  • Experience in Quality.
  • Proficient with MS Program, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project (or similar scheduling software), project management techniques and tools.
  • Excellent project management skills, organization and communication skills.
