This position is a member of the IP Specialists leadership team and reports to the Senior Global IP Administrative Manager. The Sr. Supervisor, IP Patent Specialists (US Prosecution) will manage IP Patent Specialist team and implement consistency and efficiency that will drive excellence across the IP organization. The newly formed IP Specialists Team will bring uniformity to how work is managed in the IP organization at Medtronic. The ideal candidate for this position will not only effect change but also thrive in an environment that values employees work and ideas.

This position can reside in any of our main Medtronic office facilities.

A Day in the Life


Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Manage the Patent IP Specialist team (US Prosecution) and appropriately assign work flow among the specialists to best support all business units.
  • Maintain individual patent portfolio.
  • Provide leadership and guidance on business programs, identify patent issues, analyze alternatives.
  • Supervises and develops the IP Patent Specialists’ team (US prosecution) including responsible for coordinating and supervising work, projects, and procedures.
  • Appropriately apportion work flow among the specialists to best support all business units.
  • Responsible for coordinating and supervising work, projects and processes.
  • Organize team in the creation of written MDT Patent Protocols (process and procedures).
  • Develop protocol and guidelines in collaboration with dedicated work groups in order to create consistent and efficient processes.
  • People management decisions (e.g., performance, hire, development).
  • Evaluate and track performance of Patent Specialist team and solicit feedback from all stakeholders.
  • Ensure dockets are current and company prosecution strategies are adhered.
  • Execution of all expectations of this position including personnel matters, adherence to expected consistency and communications with stakeholders.
  • Communicates with internal and external customers and vendors, across various levels of the organization.
  • Implement strategic goals established by leadership.
  • Provides guidance, mentoring and training to employees
  • Establish operational plans for team with forward looking impacts.
  • Leads, directs and reviews the work of team members to accomplish operational plans and results.
  • Problems and issues faced are difficult and may require understanding of broader set of issues, including multiple job areas or specialties.
  • Plans and establishes goals and objectives for a team.
  • Decisions impact projects or affect the deadlines, objectives, resources, and budget.
  • Determine required escalation of issues to key stakeholders.


Must Have: Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • 3+ years of paralegal experience in US and foreign intellectual property practice, with a bachelor’s degree; or, 1+ years with an advanced degree
  • Experience in managing patent data and obtaining information from regional patent office sites
  • Knowledgeable in patent prosecution and/or docketing experience
  • Experienced in US and PCT filing guidelines and requirements
  • Ability to analyze actions and request from US patent office and understand what is required
Nice to Have
  • Knowledge of Anaqua™ docketing system is desired
  • Prior experience leading teams or projects
  • Strong judgment and decision making
  • Experience with law firm and vendor services as it relates to process development
  • Able to positively lead team through change and conflicts
  • Foster a strong team dynamic
  • Experience working with team members who are not geographically co-located
  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively about how to do more with less, and how to lean out complex processes
