A Day in the Life

The Medtronic Surgical Robotics Operations team is looking for individuals who are innovative, forward-thinking, effective problem solvers, data- and results-driven, and who will continuously look for ways to improve processes to help achieve our Mission to alleviate pain, restore health, and extend life. 

This position is in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, IL and will report to the Surgical Robotics Director of Operations. The Sr Manufacturing Systems Integration Engineer will be a leader within the Medtronic manufacturing and engineering team to support production and development of the next generation robotic assisted surgical system. 

This senior engineer will be a technical leader applying an interdisciplinary approach in a system-level, fast-paced manufacturing environment, guiding a team to deliver advanced technical expertise and solutions to complex manufacturing and engineering problems. This engineer will contribute to the development, manufacture, and repair of a complex system that includes aspects of robotics, controls, imaging, multi-user interfaces and minimally invasive surgical instrumentation.

This engineer will participate in both the production test strategy and process, as well as leading debugging and root cause analysis related to the manufacture of a complex surgical robotic system.  This individual will collaborate with software engineers, electrical engineers, hardware engineers, reliability engineers, verification and validation, and service engineers to ensure the system design meets system and subsystem requirements. This engineer will also develop tools for monitoring system performance, improving utility of logged data, manufacturing efficiency and quality, and enhancing debugging.

As the Senior Manufacturing Systems Integration Engineer, you will:

  • Define manufacturing test plans, procedures, scenarios, and scripts and equipment based on requirements and design documentation.

  • Work with the testing teams to develop strategies for system level product integration and testing; including software, electrical, analytic, and mechanical aspects of the system

  • Troubleshoot, debug and upgrade test systems.

  • Evaluate and apply design-for-test (DFT) and design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and support the manufacturing test development effort to include test hardware (fixture) & software requirements

  • Maintain working knowledge of the system design and performance against the requirements

  • Build on your domain expertise, act as a strong leader and mentor to the team and make key technical decisions, coordinate objectives, and activities for the integration team

  • Guide strategic efforts to improve the software integration process and to influence the software development process based on integration strategies

  • Communicate with management related to project objectives, schedules, system performance, and integration needs

  • Learn Software Deployment procedures for all aspects of the robotic platform

  • Perform root cause analysis and debugging related to system level errors as well as triaging reported defects to identify impacted subsystems (software or hardware) and prioritization

  • Create and manage tickets related to software defects and integration findings based on root cause analysis and self-identified trends

  • Contribute to the assessment of proposed design changes and impact based on test evidence

  • Provide written disposition and evidence to resolve anomalies generated from integration issues

  • Provide software support and assistance during manufacturing processes

  • Work with internal and external partners to develop manufacturing test specifications, including interface requirements, test flow and strategy, measurement accuracy, and acceptance criteria

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 10 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have

  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant manufacturing test engineering or product development experience, or advanced degree with 5 years of relevant experience 

  • Experience reading software logs and interfacing with software tools

  • Works well in a team

  • Develops work products that reflect highly professional standards

  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Fluency in English required

  • Prior experience in system-level development of a complex electro-mechanical system

  • Prior experience with medical capital equipment, including troubleshooting and software installation

  • Experience with Linux, shell scripting, software installation, etc.

  • Experience with electro-mechanical devices controlled by software.

  • Experience with MATLAB and Simulink

  • Working experience in full-lifecycle engineering programs and processes

  • Demonstrated skills in managing priorities and coordinating team activities

  • Experience working with multiple teams on concurrent, interdependent projects

  • Familiar with manufacturing test software tools such as LabView, Test Stand and Python.

    • Experience creating test automation with test measurement equipment

  • DFLSS or LSS certification

  • Working knowledge of SQC and gauge repeatability and reproducibility

  • Process oriented and committed to continuous improvements

  • Knowledge of relevant technologies including:

    • Mechatronics / Robotics

    • Mechanical and electrical interfaces

    • Communication protocols

    • Sensors, actuators, controllers

    • Kinematics of mechanisms

    • Vision and display systems

    • Good understanding of structured product development (requirements-driven engineering, documentation, rigorous verification, etc.) Engineering verification test development and execution

    • Understanding and experience with system reliability testing and service.

    • Experience with QNX and knowledge of C and C++.

    • Medical device development experience

    • Knowledge of medical product R&D and clinical/regulatory process

Working Conditions

Standard manufacturing setting, pilot lab, external research organizations, supplier visits

Travel and flexible hours as needed
