In this exciting role as a Senior Principal Reliability Engineer you will have responsibility for acting as a recognized subject matter expert and change agent to influence the reliability of a product during development through application of design for reliability principles.
This role requires a mastery level knowledge of Reliability and working knowledge of several other areas, typically obtained through advanced education combined with experience. May have deep knowledge of project management.

A Day in the Life

You are an engineer at the pinnacle of your career. You quickly become a recognized Reliability subject matter expert at Medtronic. You will be leveraging your broad knowledge and experience crafting reliability strategy at Diabetes, working with senior leadership in both Quality and Research and Development to move the bar for product reliability. You will serve on cross-functional Reliability panels throughout Medtronic, to share, take back, and implement best practices for Reliability at Diabetes. As a premier engineer with a strong depth of knowledge in reliability, you will provide technical guidance to other more junior Quality and Reliability engineers. You will also use your influence as a strong agent for change to improve reliability practices during design and development, resulting in products with significant higher reliability than their predecessors. You will work with Marketing, Finance, Operations, and R&D to establish ongoing measures of the costs associated with reliability, and work to target activities that will bring down those costs. You will be involved in planning and overseeing reliability characterization and verification efforts on all major development programs. You will also be working with the post-market team to help strengthen the feedback loop between the field and development. You have strong people skills and can build bridges. Most of all, you demonstrate persistence and patience every day in working with others to change the culture and behaviors during design and development.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

•         Negotiates within the business to improve overall product reliability through increased standards and accountability

•         Applies technical knowledge and experience to help engineering teams make choices that lead to more reliable products, earlier on in the design and development process

•         Establishes or guides others to establish reliability frameworks within their development projects

•         Develops, coordinates and conducts technical reliability studies and evaluations of engineering design concepts and design of experiments (DOE) constructs.

•         Recommends design or test methods and statistical process control procedures for achieving required levels of product reliability.

•         Completes risk analysis studies of new design and processes.

•         Compiles and analyzes performance reports and process control statistics; investigates and analyzes relevant variables potentially affecting product and processes.

•         Ensures that corrective measures meet acceptable reliability standards.

•         Analyzes preliminary plans and develops reliability engineering programs to achieve company, customer and governmental agency reliability objectives.

•         May develop mathematical models to identify units, batches or processes posing excessive failure risks.

•         As necessary, proposes changes in design or formulation to improve system and/or process reliability.

•         May determine units and/or batches requiring environmental testing, and specifies minimum number of samples to obtain statistically valid data.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Bachelors degree in Engineering, Science or Technical field with 10+ years of experience in Engineering, Quality and/or regulated industry OR Advanced degree in Engineering, Science or Technical field with 8+ years of experience Engineering, Quality and/or regulated industry.   
Nice to Have

  • 10 years as a practicing design engineer within a Research and Development organization.
  • Experience as a trainer for software tools, particularly Reliasoft
  • Current or past certification board member for ASQ or other professional organization
  • Experience with leading large, complex initiatives of strategic importance to the business unit, involving large cross-functional teams
  • Author or contributor to Reliability literature
  • In depth knowledge and experience with applying ANSYS or other Finite Element Modeling software to improve product design
  • FDA regulatory experience- eg. presenting during FDA audits, responding to regulatory inquiries, communicating directly with FDA statisticians
  • Experience with Diabetes products- continuous glucose monitoring and infusion pump systems
  • Experience in Design-Reliability-Manufacturing (DRM) or equivalent corporate design and/or manufacturing process improvement initiative
