You will be a key member of Medtronic’s Robot Assisted Surgery (RAS) Business Unit new product development team working to commercialize a Surgical Robotics Platform.

The RAS business unit is part of the Minimally Invasive Therapies Group, which strives to enable earlier diagnosis, better treatment, faster complication-free recovery, and enhanced patient outcomes through less invasive surgical solutions. 
A Day in the Life
As a Senior Controls Engineer, you will join a team of engineers working on the development and commercialization of Medtronic’s next-generation Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) platform and other associated robotics projects.  You will focus on the design, developing, and testing of controls systems for the Medtronic Surgical Robotics Platform.  In addition, you will help create custom testing, debug, and servicing tools to help support the entire controls and software development teams.

 You will:
  • Design and develop control algorithms and supporting tools using Simulink/MATLAB on a real-time operating system and control platform
  • Design, develop, and support testing tools and software to enable the verification and validation of the controls software
  • Define and review software requirements pertaining to controls and robot kinematics
  • Define and execute verification plans.  Test software and fix defects.
  • Review teammates Simulink models and ensure that all software meets quality standards.  Prepare and participate in design reviews.
  • Document or participate in the documentation of the software including architecture and design detail, unit testing, anomaly tracking and reports.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 2 years relevant experience
Nice to Have: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree and five years of relevant experience, Master’s or PhD degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience designing, implementing and analyzing control systems for highly accurate mechatronic and robotic systems.
  • Proficient use of controls software development tools and languages (MATLAB/Simulink preferred)
  • Experience launching commercial products, preferably in the medical technology area
  • Knowledge of robotics and multi-body kinematics and dynamics
  • Knowledge of software development process and common development tools
  • Hands-on experience with medical product development - regulator processes, safety considerations, hands-on experience with medical/surgical devices/instruments.
  • Experience launching commercial medical software products
  • Experience in implementing fast control loops, particularly those involving motors and sensors.
  • Knowledge of surgical robotics and minimally invasive surgery
  • Fluency in English (German a plus)
