The Technical Writing Manager will work closely with the department senior manager to lead the day to day operation of the Technical Communication department. This position will focus on growing and managing the technical writing team as well as leading the strategy and execution of content development and content management of patient and clinician focused technical literature. The role includes mentoring technical writers to successfully achieve Medtronic Diabetes project development milestones. This position will lead and interact daily with a team of technical writers and project coordinators within the department to support their growth and development, as well as facilitate breaking down barriers to success.

A Day in the Life

 

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

  • Creates, develops, plans, writes and edits operational, instructional, maintenance or test procedures for paper, multimedia, web-based publications and user sites; may produce content for embedded user assistance technology.

  • Conducts interviews with various users and technical staff to gather data for documentation.

  • Researches and translates technical information into manuals and/or web-based documents for nontechnical and technical users.

  • May document engineering processes and specifications.

  • Recommends formats responsive to technical and customer requirements.

  • Produces products that conform to the company documentation and quality assurance standards

 

People leadership: 

 

• You will manage, coach and mentor a team of senior technical writing supervisors, technical writers and project coordinators, including in-house and outsourced team members

 

• You will manage the team that performs the daily operations of the technical writing team, including actively implementing guidelines and best practices in management and medical device labeling production 

 

• You will foster the creation of a productive work environment for staff

 

• You will manage recruiting, selecting, and onboarding new hires

 

• You will lead the development of employees by performing annual performance & development evaluations as well as actively engaging in career development conversations and actions

 

• You will provide ongoing performance feedback to direct and indirect reports

   

Labeling development and management: 

 

• You will supervise the development of global technical documentation

 

• You will review and implement innovations in publishing, writing, or process control that have potential for cost savings, reduced rework, improved quality, and reduced time to market

 

• You will ensure that product labeling is developed on time

   

Content Management: 

 

• You will provide the strategy and leadership of the content management system, including content written, stored, single sourced across documents for maximum content reuse and translation/localization savings.

 

• You will lead the development, maintenance, and enforcement of content standards/strategy to ensure consistency and quality 

 

• You will lead the team’s training of writers on the team’s content standards/strategy

 

• You will continually improve document quality, organization, and harmonization 

 

• You will represent Diabetes in content management discussions across Medtronic

      

Quality Management & Process Improvement: 

 

• You will manage the team that ensures the quality of labeling produced in the Diabetes BU

 

• You will ensure that materials developed adhere to legal/regulatory/quality requirements

 

• You will ensure that materials developed adhere to Medtronic Master brand and corporate identity

 

• You will be an advocate for intentional process improvement and change management initiatives in the areas of labeling technology and innovation, technical communications production and technical writing project management.

 

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree with 5+ years of experience in communications, labeling and/or technical writing and/or, or an advanced degree with a minimum of 3 year of experience managing teams in communications, labeling and/or technical writing.

 

Nice to Have

  • Experience managing a technical writing team in a regulated environment, specifically medical device or medical industry

  • Experience as a direct manager of a large functional team reporting into a matrix hierarchy of program core teams

  • Experience managing and launching a component content management system such as Vasont or SDL Knowledge Center

  • Knowledge of Medtronic and its product portfolio

  • Experience leading translation and localization projects, including engaging with translation suppliers

  • Proven ability to work effectively with others across departments/disciplines to implement solutions

  • Strong change management and project management skills, including guiding direct reports to tackle complex project requests/deadlines with shifting priorities

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, to communicate internally and externally, and across various levels of the organization

  • Shares and exchanges relevant information to reach solutions, and gaining cooperation of other parties

  • Proven ability to work independently and motivated to perform at a high-level with little supervision

  • Excellent ability to plan, schedule, and arrange own activities in accomplishing objectives

  • Experience working on multi-disciplinary teams and liaising across functional business units

  • Proven ability to manage competing priorities in a fast paced environment

  • Strong attention to detail
