The Medical Illustrator/Animator reports to the Sr. Manager of Digital Learning Innovations (DLI) and is responsible for accurately communicating complex medical and scientific concepts to multiple audiences in a highly interactive and engaging format. Primary responsibilities will include the creation of custom medical illustrations in support of customer and patient education on relevant patient anatomy, surgical procedures and the clinical application of the company’s products. This position brings visual design sensibilities and expertise in information organization, visual communication, and storytelling to produce a broad range of visual media including medical illustration, 2D animation, interactive educational media, and graphic design. This role ensures brand consistency and graphic identity across all work, delivering an array of best-in-class visual products in multiple modalities. This position plays a key role developing visual educational content that effectively addresses diverse audience needs.


This position partners closely with other members of the DLI team including the Sr. Medical Illustrator, Project Coordinator, Instructional Designers and LMS Administrator. This position also works closely with internal cross-functional partners and subject matter experts (SMEs) to understand project/image learning objectives and develop deliverables to best achieve identified educational goals.  


The Medical Illustrator/Animator will manage multiple projects concurrently, adjust individual priorities as needed, and overcome obstacles to meet project deadlines.




·       Design and produce illustrations and graphics to accurately and effectively communicate medical and scientific concepts, including researching content and creating prototypes/mockups as needed.

·       Design and produce 2D animations, video and graphics to support marketing and other internal functions.

·       Collaborate effectively with internal cross-functional partners and subject matter experts (SMEs) to understand project/image learning objectives and develop deliverables to best achieve identified educational goals

·       Collaborate with DLI Project Coordinator to align with project and process management standards.

·       Collaborate with DLI Instructional Designers to align with instructional design standards and processes.

·       Follow standards and guidelines for adherence to Corporate brand style and standards for consistent identity.

·       Stay current on new technologies, industry trends, cutting edge techniques and trends which may affect current departmental practices.

·       Make recommendations for new methods, materials and tools to enhance the educational value of creative course materials and/or improve efficiency of departmental practices.

·       Establish and document processes and procedures to produce visual materials, in collaboration with the DLI team.

·       Maintain files of all materials and electronic documents in active folders, archives and digital asset management system(s).

·       Manage multiple projects at different stages simultaneously in a fast-paced environment, while meeting deadlines and maintaining quality.

·       Identify and communicate potential development problems or challenges as they surface and propose mitigation strategies.

·       Communicate changes in priorities and direction of the goal or project to the team and project stakeholders.

·       Manage and tracks project work in the organization’s project management system.

·       Bachelor’s degree in medical illustration plus 2-3 years of experience producing high-quality medical visualizations, including digital formats for online or mobile device delivery. An advanced specialized degree may count toward the experience.

·       Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees in design (e.g., graphics, marketing, or other discipline) with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience in scientific or medical illustration will be considered; or a combination of 5 years of experience in scientific or medical illustration, and related training that provides the required knowledge and skills.

·       In-depth knowledge of anatomy, medical terminology, and medical illustration principles.

·       Excellent drawing skills; sketching and silhouette understanding.

·       Proficiency using Adobe Creative Suite (CS) Photoshop and Illustrator as well as tools for effectively sharing/prototyping/collaborating on visual assets.

·       Proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Suite including Outlook, PowerPoint, Word and Excel.

·       Understanding of technology and ability to learn new software quickly.

·       Strong creative and technical problem-solving skills.

·       Strong working knowledge of basic graphic design skills and principles including color theory, digital and print layout and composition, typography, image editing.

·       Highly organized, detail-oriented, flexible, and able to collaborate across functional areas to handle multiple illustrations, animation, and design projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.

·       Strong interpersonal and project management skills with an ability to work effectively in a team environment and with people across/at varying levels in the organization.

·       Flexible with a “can do” attitude and can remain professional under high pressure situations.

·       Ability to work independently under limited supervision to determine and develop approach to solutions.

·       Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

·       Compelling portfolio or work must be submitted for consideration.




·       Master's degree from an accredited graduate program in medical illustration/biomedical communications preferred.

·       Board Certified Medical Illustrator (CMI) desired.

·       Two or more years’ experience in professional graphic design working in print, web and digital media.

·       Strong knowledge of graphic design, typography, color theory, layout, and storyboarding.

·       Experience using Adobe Creative Suite (CS) InDesign, After Effects, and Premier.

·       Experience in the integration of instructional materials such as video, graphics, animations, and interactive media elements into eLearning courses/web content.

·       Prior experience working on projects for pharmaceutical and/or medical device manufacturers a plus.

·       Experience in eLearning and instructional design methodology.

·       Experience developing eLearning training using tools such as Articulate 360 RISE, Storyline or similar development platforms.

·       Familiarity with Workfront or similar project management system(s).

Works occasionally with business unit and/or corporate Creative Services teams
